TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn baseball team closed out the three-game series with Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon taking the first game of the twinbill, 7-4, before falling in game two, 5-1. The Ichabods are currently scheduled to play a mid-week non-conference game against Northwest Missouri on Wednesday, March 24. First pitch at Falley Field is set for 4 p.m.

GAME ONE (Washburn 7-Northeastern State 4)Â
Washburn's
Parker Dunn led off the home half of the second inning with a double to left field and then reached third after tagging up on a fly out to center field. Dunn then scored the first run of the game on an RBI groundout by
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli.Â

The Ichabods (6-10, 6-6 MIAA) added another run in the bottom of the third inning to go up, 2-0.
Cole Emerson reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a groundout.
Eric Hinostroza hit a single through the right side that drove in Emerson.Â
Â
Washburn added two more insurance runs on three hits in the sixth inning, all with two outs.
Zion Bowlin hit a single to right center and then stole second to get in scoring position. Clark-Chiapparelli drove in his second run of the day with a single through the left side and then stole second.
Kros Bay recorded the third-straight single of the frame to bring home Clark-Chiapparelli to make it 4-0 in favor of Washburn.Â

After allowing two hits in the first inning,
Brock Gilliam settled in and dominated for seven innings. He recorded five 1-2-3 innings and struck out the side in the fifth.Â

Washburn extended its lead to 6-0 with two more runs in the seventh.
Xavier De Leon doubled down the left field line on an 0-2 pitch and then traded places with
Brett Ingram on his double to left. Dunn poked a single through the right side to bring home Ingram.Â

The RiverHawks (10-4, 8-4 MIAA) spoiled the shutout in the ninth inning, scoring four runs on four hits. The game ended on a two-RBI single by Blaze Brothers, who was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.Â

Bowlin and De Leon both had two hits and scored one run. Hinostroza and Clark-Chiapparelli each had one hit and two RBI.Â

Gilliam pitched a gem to improve his record to 3-1 as he threw seven scoreless innings and allowed just three hits while tying a career-high in strikeouts with 13. Jonathan Smithey of Northeastern State received his first loss of the season as he went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned, and struck out five.

GAME TWO (Northeastern State 5-Washburn 1)
The RiverHawks started the scoring in the second inning with one run on a sacrifice fly. NSU went up 2-0 in the second frame after an RBI double by Blake Freeman.Â

Aside from a double by De Leon in the third inning, the RiverHawks' Nic Swanson, who entered the game with the lowest ERA in the MIAA, cruised through the Ichabod lineup and did not allow another hit until the seventh inning.
Leading off the seventh frame, Ingram blasted the first pitch over the left field fence for a solo homer to cut the deficit to one.Â
Northeastern State added three runs on three hits in the ninth to push its lead 5-1 in the top of the ninth. Swanson returned to the mound to finish what he started and retired the Ichabods in order for the complete game victory.
Ingram scored the lone Washburn run of the game on his fourth home run of the season. De Leon and Dunn both hit doubles and
Carson Sader came up with a pinch hit single in the eighth inning.
Swanson went the distance and improved to 4-0 as he allowed one earned run on four hits with nine strikeouts and zero walks. Ichabod starter
Sean McElwee received the loss, going 8.1 innings and giving up four runs on five hits. He struck out a career-high 10 batters in the game.
