TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 18 nationally-ranked men's tennis blanked Newman, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
The Ichabods clinched the doubles point, courtesy of a 7-5 win by the duo of
Bradley Eidenmueller and
Sebastian Pjontek and a default Washburn win due to no Newman players at the third court.
Paul Haase opened singles action with a 6-0, 6-2 victory from No. 3 spot. From the top of the lineup,
Raul-Alin Dicu then defeated his opponent by 7-6 (7-1), 6-0. Battling through a long match,
Miquel Perez won his match from the No. 2 spot by scores of 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) and clinched the winning point.
Daniel Bird followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory from the fifth spot in the lineup. Eidenmueller then took a 6-3, 6-4 win from the fourth court to end singles action. Newman did not have a player for the sixth spot, giving Washburn the default win to lead the Ichabods to a 7-0 sweep of the Jets.
Washburn improves to a 8-2 record this season, while Newman falls to 7-6.
The Ichabods will host MIAA foe Emporia State on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
