JOPLIN, Mo. – The Washburn softball team came up on the short end of the stick twice this afternoon as the Ichabods were swept in a doubleheader at Missouri Southern on Wednesday falling 9-5 and 6-3. Washburn will be back in action at Northwest Missouri on Thursday.
Game 1 – MSSU 9, WU 5
The Ichabods scored in their first at bat when
Ashton Friend put Washburn on the board with a home run to center, but the Lions came back to tie the score in their first at bat in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own. The Lions added two in the second and one more in the third taking a 4-1 lead.
Washburn scored in the fourth inning when
Hadley Kerschen led off the inning with a single and after a single by
Bri Francis, Kerschen would score on
Jaycee Ginter's single to right center cutting the lead to 4-1. However the Lions came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth with two more in the fifth going up 7-2.
The Ichabods added a solo run in the sixth on another RBI single by Ginter scoring Kerschen but again the Lions responded with two more in the bottom of the sixth going up 9-3. In the seventh, a double by
Kamryn Garvie and a single by
Marrit Mead set up a 2-RBI single to right by Friend trimming the lead back to 9-5, but Washburn would get no closer.
Washburn finished with 10 hits in the opener with two by Kerschen, Friend, Francis and Ginter.
Raegen Hamm took the loss allowing four earned runs falling to 12-5 on the season.
Game 2 – MSSU 6, WU 3
The Ichabods (23-8, 9-5 MIAA) fell behind after the Lions scored a run in the bottom of the second, but regained the lead with two runs in the third when
Maddie Stipsits reached on a double and then later scored on a double by Kerschen. Friend connected on a double of her own sending Kerschen home as Washburn went up 2-1.
The Lions scored four times in the fourth inning grabbing a 5-2 lead. The Ichabods cut the lead to 5-3 in the fifth after Mead singled and then scored on a triple by Kerschen. The Lions added one more run in in the sixth and the Ichabod hit into a double play in the seventh to end the game.
Mead, Kerschen and Friend each had two hits to lead the Ichabods. Ginter took the loss in the circle as her record dropped to 11-3.
