TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 18 nationally-ranked Washburn women's tennis team defeated Missouri Western, 5-2, on Friday afternoon to improve its record to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in MIAA action.
The Ichabods grabbed the first point of the match as they won two of the three doubles matches. No. 2 duo
Maja Jung and
Kinsey Fields started things off with a 6-3 victory.
Maria Soler Valverde and
Svea Crohn then defeated their opponents by 6-2.
In singles action, Jung swiftly took down her opponent at the fifth spot by scores of 6-0, 6-2 to give Washburn a 2-0 lead. The Griffons tied the score at 2-2 after defeating Crohn at the No. 2 spot and
Logan Morrissey at the No. 4 spot. Soler Valverde helped get the Ichabods back on track as she took a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory from the third court.
Facing tough competition against the No. 33 nationally-ranked singles player Ioanna Lathouri,
Marta Torres did not let that intimidate her. Torres took down Lathouri at the top of the lineup by scores of 6-4, 6-7 (3-6), 6-1.
Cadence Lynn sealed Washburn's 5-2 victory over Missouri Western as she battled back from an early deficit to defeat her opponent by 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at the bottom of the lineup.
Washburn improves to 11-1 on the season with a 4-1 record in conference play. Missouri Western now sits at 8-4 overall and an even 2-2 in MIAA play.
The Ichabods host the Southern Arkansas Muleriders on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Genesis Tennis Center. The men's team will follow the women with an approximate start time of 2 p.m.
