Ichabods walk off in nightcap to secure senior day sweep over Jets

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn baseball team got two final victories at Falley Field this regular season as the Ichabods rallied late twice on Saturday and defeated Newman by the score 7-6 in both games. The Ichabods will wrap up the regular season next weekend on the road at Northwest Missouri starting with a doubleheader on Friday, May 7 at noon.

GAME ONE (Washburn 7, Newman 6)
Washburn took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third in the opening game. Kros Bay led off the inning with a double down the right field line and advanced to third after tagging up on a fly out before scoring on a wild pitch. Cole Emerson reached first after getting hit by the pitch and then swiped second base. A groundout moved him over to third and then he scored on Eric Hinostroza's RBI single up the middle.

Newman responded the next half inning while capitalizing on two Washburn errors and jumped out in front, 3-2. The Jets went up 5-2 in the fifth frame after a two-run homer.

The Ichabods started their fight back in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Parker Dunn brought in one run on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. Brett Ingram made it a one run game with an RBI single up the middle to score Xavier De Leon.

The Jets pulled their starter in the bottom of the seventh and the Ichabods made the most of that change. A hit batter and a walk started off the inning and Ingram's bunt single loaded the bases. Peter Shearer scored Bowlin on a sacrifice fly to left field to knot the score at 5-5.

Newman got that run back and reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth after a leadoff walk scored on a double.

Emerson drew his second leadoff walk of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Emerson scored the tying run after back-to-back wild pitches. Hinostroza battled during an eight pitch at bat and eventually singled to right center. He swiped second base and the catcher's throw down was wild and Hinostroza hurried down to third on the error. Bowlin's groundout to shortstop was able to bring in the go-ahead run and make it 7-6 in favor of Washburn.

Braden Minor recorded an efficient 1-2-3 ninth inning with seven pitches to record the save and secure the team victory.

Hinostroza and Bay both went 2-4 at the plate and scored once. Ingram was also 2-4 and drove in one run. Emerson scored three runs and drew two walks.

Dalton Huggins earned his first career win after working the eighth inning and allowing two hits. Starter Brock Gilliam grinded out seven innings in his no-decision, throwing 137 pitches and allowing six runs, four earned, and four hits and four walks while tying a career-best 13 strikeouts.

GAME TWO (Washburn 7, Newman 6 – 11 innings)
Washburn (16-20, 15-15 MIAA) found itself trailing 5-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth after Newman scored in the first, third, and fifth innings.

A walk, single, and a hit by pitch quickly loaded the bases for Washburn with one out in the fifth. De Leon brought in the Ichabods' first two runs with a single through the left side. With two outs, De Leon stole second to get into scoring position and then made it home on Hinostroza's double. Down in the count 0-2, Bowlin ripped an RBI single to left field to make it a one run game, 5-4.

The Ichabods took their first lead of the game in the seventh after back-to-back RBI singles from Bowlin and Dunn to go in front, 6-5.

Newman (8-21, 7-20 MIAA) wasn't done yet, though, and scored the tying run in the top of the ninth with one out after getting hit by the pitch, two wild pitches, and an infield single.

Washburn went down quietly in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extras.

Newman hit a one out double in the 10th frame, but a laser throw from Wyatt Featherston in left field got the runner out trying to stretch it into a triple and Washburn got out of the inning unscathed.

The Jets had an incredible throw of their own from the outfield to get an Ichabod out at third base in the bottom of the 10th.

Still locked at 6-all, Casey Steward entered the game in the 11th and recorded a 1-2-3 inning. After getting a strikeout for the second out, Steward made a great defensive play on a ground ball back to the mound for the final out of the inning.

Featherston led off the bottom of the with an infield single and then stole second base and dashed over to third after another errant throw down by the catcher. With a 2-2 count, De Leon ended the game with a walk off single to left field and was quickly mobbed by his team in celebration.

De Leon turned in an impressive game as he played a part in five of Washburn's seven runs. He went 4-6 at the dish and drove in three runs and scored twice. Bowlin had two hits and two RBI. Featherston was 3-4 with two runs scored, including the game-winner.

Steward received the win and improved his record to 2-1. Brant Bennett threw a scoreless 10th inning and Conner Bond contributed 2.1 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.

Before the doubleheader started, 12 Ichabod seniors were recognized on the field for their contributions to the program: Bond, De Leon, Emerson, Featherston, Gilliam, Hinostroza, Sean McElwee, Minor, Carson Sader, Shearer, Nick Steiner, and Mark Wanner.
