EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 20 nationally-ranked Washburn men's tennis team fell, 4-0, to No. 23 Northwest Missouri in the MIAA/GAC Championship on Sunday at Edmond Center Court. The Ichabods are still in contention for a NCAA Central Regional spot as selections will be made on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
In the last regular season match of the season, No. 20 Washburn overcame No. 23 Northwest Missouri, 4-3, in a first-place MIAA battle. With the win, the Ichabods earned the No. 1 MIAA seed in the tournament while the Bearcats got the No. 2 MIAA seed. This championship match was a rematch with higher stakes but Washburn could not quite keep pace with Northwest Missouri this time around.
The Bearcats won the doubles point as the No. 12 ranked doubles duo of
Bradley Eidenmueller/
Sebastian Pjontek fell by 6-1 to their Northwest Missouri opponents at the top spot.
Paul Haase and
Miquel Perez fell from the second spot by the same 6-1 score, giving the Bearcats an early advantage.
In singles action, the No. 1, 4 and 5 spots went down in order, starting with No. 24 ranked
Raul-Alin Dicu fell to No. 6 Andrea Zamurri by set scores of 6-2, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. Eidenmueller was defeated by his opponent at the fourth spot by 6-1, 6-2.
Daniel Bird then fell to his opponent by set scores of 6-4, 6-2 at the fifth spot. Although Perez battled hard to take his opponent to a third set from the No. 2 spot and Haase and
Marc Roura Casi were battling at the third and sixth spots, their matches went unfinished as the Ichabods fell the Bearcats, 4-0, in the MIAA Championship.
Washburn is currently ranked No. 2 in the Central Region. The selection committee will determine what four teams advance to the Central Regional on May 4 at 7 p.m. on NCAA.com. The Central Regional is set to take place on May 7-9 at Edmond Center Court in Edmond, Okla.
