Women’s tennis advances to NCAA Regional final, set to face UCO for third time this season

EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 16 nationally-ranked Washburn women's tennis team took a 4-2 victory over No. 2 seed Augustana in the NCAA Central Region semifinal round on Saturday morning, advancing to face Central Oklahoma in the regional final on Sunday. 
 
Washburn got the early advantage as they swept doubles point with two straight wins from the No. 1 and 3 spots. The duo of Marta Torres and Logan Morrissey set the tone with a 6-2 victory at the top of the lineup. At the No. 3 spot, Svea Crohn and Maria Soler Valverde followed with a 6-4 win to give the Ichabods the 1-0 lead. Maja Jung and Kinsey Fields were up 5-3 at the middle spot but did not finish as they only went to the clinching match.
 
Jung started singles action off with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot. Cadence Lynn continues to be a key factor in the Ichabod lineup at the No. 6 spot, putting the Ichabods up 3-0 with a victory by set scores of 6-1, 6-1. After Augustana gained two points at the top and second spots of the lineup, the Ichabods bounced back. Soler Valverde defeated her opponent by scores of 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot to clinch the 4-2 Washburn win over Augustana. 
 
The Ichabods improve to 17-2 on the season, while Augustana concludes their season with a 18-3 overall record.
 
The Ichabods will go head-to-head with No. 3 nationally ranked Central Oklahoma in the NCAA Central Region final match on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Edmond Center Court. This will be the third time the squads have played each other this season. Central Oklahoma won the last two matches this season by 6-1 in a regular season matchup on April 2 and by 4-0 in the MIAA Championship match on May 1. The winner of this match will advance as one of 16 teams to compete in the NCAA Championship on May 19-21 in Surprise, Ariz.
