Ichabods Win Season Opener over the Cardinals

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The long wait is over as the Ichabods' season begins with a 1-0 victory over the William Jewell Cardinals. In a slow first half, the Washburn defense kept the Cardinals to just 1 off-target shot.

In the first half, it was all Washburn as they held possession on William Jewell's side of the field for a lot of the half taking 3 shots all being on goal, they could not get the ball into the net. As Khloe Shuckman who took two of those shots was a pain for the Cardinals defense the entire game. For the Cardinals, the only source of offense game from freshman forward Clara Fronabarger. On the bright side, William Jewell's defense kept it a 0-0 game heading into the second half.

The game did not stay scoreless for long as a Washburn possession five minutes into the second half in the Cardinals box leads to a curving upper-ninety shot from senior Tera Lynch assisted with a pass back from Shuckman. The Ichabods ended the half tripling the amount shots taken with 13. Cardinals still found nothing on offense with just three shots making the total for the game three. Ichabods' keeper Raegan Wells needing only to make one save and her 6th shutout (2nd against William Jewell) in the first game of her sophomore campaign.

With the win against the Cardinals, Washburn takes the 2-1 series lead and a two-game win streak. Washburn has outscored the Cardinals 4-0 in those two wins. The next game for the Ichabods is back at Yager Stadium as they host a tough Augustana on Sunday, Sept. 9. Kick-off will be at 1 p.m.
