Washburn comes up short vs Saint Mary, losing 87-79

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn men's JV scored two away from a season-high in points but was unable to come away with its first win of the season, losing to University of Saint Mary 87-79.

The first half was back and forth the whole way, the biggest lead belonged to the Spires and was only seven points with 8:40 to go in the half. The Ichabods would come back to take the lead on a layup by Isiah Braynen at the 2:41 mark in the opening 20 minutes.

At halftime Washburn was tied with Saint Mary at 36 even while the Spires shot a higher percentage and knocked down three more 3-pointers. The Ichabods were able to force eight turnovers and created extra opportunities on the offensive glass.

Saint Mary started the second half on a 10-2 run, forcing a Washburn timeout. A steal and a layup by Cameron Heiman at the 12:08 mark brought the Ichabods within four points. Twice in the final 10 minutes Washburn got the Spires lead down to three, but both times they responded down the stretch, breaking the Ichabods press and knocking down free throws to win by eight.

Cameron Heiman paced Washburn with 26 points, he also added seven rebounds and four steals. Josh Jamison scored 17 points and pulled down a team-best 13 rebounds while adding two blocks and three steals.

Stavian Jones scored 15 points with five assists and Trever Quaney rounded out the Ichabod quartet in double figures, with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for the Spires, led by Tyler Lydon with 19 points and Jayson Luse who scored 18.

Saint Mary finished the game shooting 47% from the floor compared to Washburn's 37.2%. The Ichabods came away with more steals, 13 to eight, and pulled down seven more offensive rebounds but it was not enough to make up the difference.

Washburn will play two straight on the road beginning with Avila University on Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m.
