Ichabods comeback halted by Haskell in 80-73 loss

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn women's JV had an early lead but was unable to complete a second half comeback, losing a high-scoring game to Haskell Indian Nations University, 80-73. 

The Ichabods controlled a six-point lead through the midway point of the first quarter. After 10 minutes they were tied at 17 with the Fighting Indians thanks to six offensive rebounds in the period.  

The offense slowed down in the second quarter where Washburn shot only 21.1%. Haskell began the quarter on a 14-4 run to send the Ichabods into halftime trailing 35-27. 

The Fighting Indians continued to roll offensively out of halftime, scoring 20 points in the third quarter. Bailey Collar scored 10 points on her own in the third period, but Washburn was still outscored as a team by five.  

In the fourth quarter the Ichabods' offense made it interesting, as they knocked down four 3-pointers. Tristyn Kremeier and Hayley Ventura each connected twice from deep to get Washburn within five points with under a minute remaining. Haskell was able to knock down free throws down the stretch to secure the 80-73 win.  

Bailey Collar led the Ichabods with 21 points, adding three assists and three rebounds. Raegan Wells had 17 points to go along with 18 rebounds, four blocks and three steals while shooting 11-15 at the line. Both Kremeier and Ventura had 12 points along with six and five rebounds respectively.  

Three-point shooting was the difference in the game, with the Fighting Indians knocking down 13 triples compared to only seven from the home team. Star Her Many Horses led Haskell with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Maliyah Soto added 21 points and also pulled down 12 rebounds.  

Washburn will be on the road against Labette Community College on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
