TOPEKA, Kan. -- After falling behind early, Washburn was able to make it close in the second half before the comeback effort came up just short, falling 64-50 to Highland Community College.
The Ichabods got off to a slow start, as they trailed 22-11 after the first quarter where the Scotties shot 55%. Washburn began to shoot better in the second quarter, knocking down three 3-pointers in the frame which helped out the defense as well. Late free throws by Chloe Carter cut the deficit down to four points as they went into halftime trailing 33-29.
After a slow start to the third quarter both teams began to score late. The Ichabods were able to cut the lead down to a single point twice, the second time coming with 1:54 left after a layup by Riley Hett. Highland scored the final five points to lead 44-38 going into the fourth.
Washburn's offense was shut out the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, allowing the Scotties to extend their lead to 15. It would never get below 13 the rest of the way as Highland won 64-50.
Bailey Collar led the Ichabods in scoring with 14 points along with three assists. Chloe Carter added nine points and three steals. Riley Hett also had nine points, while Raegan Wells had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Washburn held the Scotties to just 38% shooting, and won the free throw battle 26 to six, but were unable to take advantage by shooting just 24.5% overall in the game.
Highland was led by Courtney Davis with 15 points and Kenadi Rising who scored 12.
The Ichabods next game will also be at home as they take on Labette Community College on Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m.
