Ichabods hot start doesn't hold in 76-67 loss to Labette

TOPEKA, KAN. -- Washburn jumped out to an early lead but could not maintain the fast start, losing to Labette Community College 76-67 on Friday night.

It was all Ichabods early on as they scored the first 11 points of the game, all coming from Bailey Collar and Raegan Wells. The Cardinals were able to storm back and take a 19-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams traded blows in the second quarter, Labette led by six with 4:37 remaining in the period but Washburn was able to take the lead with under a minute left. A four-point play just before halftime gave the Cardinals a 34-31 advantage at the break.

After halftime Labette's offense took off, scoring 23 points in the third quarter. The Ichabods shot well, going 7-16 in the period, but were outrebounded 16-5 allowing the Cardinals to lead by 10 going into the fourth quarter.

Labette began with an 8-0 run in the final quarter and led by double digits until the 2:16 mark in the game. Six straight points from Raegan Wells in the final three minutes cut the deficit to seven but that was as close as Washburn got before falling 76-67.

Raegan Wells led all scorers with 22 points, going 8-9 at the line while also adding nine rebounds and three blocks. Bailey Collar finished with 16 points and three 3-pointers. Tristyn Kremeier also knocked down three treys, finishing with 11 and Hayley Ventura added 10 points.

The Cardinals had four scorers in double figures led by Alexis Calderson who had 20 points and six assists. Jayla Smith finished with eight points and 19 rebounds.

As a team the Ichabods were outrebounded 53-33 but were able to win the turnover battle 22-16 and held Labette to under 40% shooting in the game.

Washburn will play its final home game Monday, Dec. 5 against Ottawa University at 5:30 p.m.
