TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn men's JV won a third straight game with a start to finish over the Ottawa University Gold JV team, 77-71.
Within the first eight minutes of the game the Ichabods jumped out to a double-digit lead with a balanced scoring effort. With just under five minutes left in the first half the Braves cut the lead to eight points before Washburn responded with a 13-4 run to end the half, going into the break up 42-25.
The Ichabods' offense continued to roll, with the lead growing to 21 points at the 16:43 mark of the second half after a 3-pointer by Garrett Peterson. It would get to as high as 24 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half until Ottawa started to chip away at it.
A 5-0 Braves run got the lead down to 11 points with 3:47 left to play in the game. Washburn still held a 10-point lead with 70 seconds remaining. Even with a few mis queues by the Ichabods in the final minute the lead never got below four points and Washburn was able to escape with a 77-71 win.
Four Ichabods scored in double figures, led by Cameron Heiman with 20 points and a team-high four steals as well. Josh Jamison had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds on 7-11 shooting. Kevin Eman and Garrett Peterson ended with 16 and 13 points respectively.
Ottawa had two players reach double figures, Kater Hoeme led with 16 points while Ismael Fadiga had 15.
The six-point difference was found primarily in the turnover margin, which the Ichabods won 17-13, and in points off turnovers and fast break scoring which Washburn had six- and seven-point advantages in. The Ichabods finished shooting 46.1% from the floor while the Braves were at 43.7%.
Washburn will head on the road Monday, Dec. 5 to take on Avila University at 7:00 p.m.
