Ichabods drop a pair on the opening day of the Desert Stinger Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team opened the 2022 Desert Stinger Classic with a pair of losses falling 10-2 to host school Montana State-Billings before falling in the nightcap 4-3 to St. Martin's. Washburn returns to action on Saturday with two more games as they will take on Western Washington and CSU-Dominquez Hills.

Game 1 - Montana State Billings 10, Washburn 2
The Yellowjackets (5-4) scored four runs in the first inning and added five more in the second picking up a 10-2 win over the Ichabods (1-4).

Marrit Mead led off the game with a single and then the Ichabods were held hitless until the fourth inning when Maddie Stipsits singled to left. After a pinch-hit single by Jaden LaBarge that scored Stipsits, Rylee Seymour recorded a pinch-hit ground out scoring LaBarge for Washburn second and final run of the game.

Raegen Hamm took the loss falling to 1-2 on the season in the circle as Washburn was outhit 7-4. 

Game 2 - St. Martin's 4, Washburn 3

The Saints broke open a scoreless tie in the top of the third taking a 1-0 lead, however in the bottom of the third, Stipsits led off the inning with a single and ten moved to second on a ground out by Kaylee Wagner. After a Mead ground out, Stipsits moved to third and then scored on a Paige Robbins single to left tying the score at 1-1. Hadley Kerschen reached base on an infield single and after a passed ball and a walk by Kimi Patterson loading the bases, LaBarge singled to third scoring Robbins putting the Ichabods up 2-1.

Washburn added a run in the fourth on a sac fly by Wagner scoring Autymn Schreiner who was a pinch runner for Rylee Seymour after her lead-off double as the Ichabods went up 3-1.

The Saints (1-0) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead and the Ichabods left the tying run in scoring position in the one-run loss.

Jaycee Ginter took the loss in the circle striking out 10 batters scattering seven hits over seven innings of pitching. Kerschen, Seymour and Stipsits each had two hits for the Ichabods in the game.
