TUCSON, Ariz. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team split two games on Saturday at the Desert Stinger Classic topping Western Washington 6-2 before falling to CSU-Dominquez Hills 8-3 in the second game. Washburn wraps up the weekend on Sunday morning against the Academy of Art.
Game 1 – Washburn 6, Western Washington 2
The Washburn Ichabods turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead scoring five times in the bottom of the third en route to a 6-2 win over Western Washington.
In the third, the Ichabods sent nine batters to the plate as
Autymn Schreiner led the inning off with a single and then moved to second on a sac bunt by
Hailey Neira. After a walk by
Kimi Patterson and a single by
Hadley Kerschen scoring Schreiner,
Marrit Mead walked and then
Rylee Seymour walked. After
Jaden LaBarge drew a walk with the bases loaded sending Kerschen home,
Jaycee Ginter singled to right scoring two more runs as the Ichabods took a 5-1 lead.
The Vikings added a solo run in the fifth and then the Ichabods added a run in the sixth after Patterson singled to left scoring Schreiner who singled in her at bat staking the Ichabods to a 6-2 lead.
Ginter then retired the final seven batters en route to the win as she struck out eight in the game. Kerschen and Schriener had two singles and Ginter drove in two.
Game 2 – CSU-Dominguez Hills 8, Washburn 3
The Toro scored four runs in the bottom of the first and then the Ichabods came back with two of their own when Schreiner singled and then moved to second on a wild pitch. After a Skylard Darnell singled and Neira drove in a run with a single to left sending Darnell home on a CSU-DH error.
CSU picked up a run in the bottom of the second taking a 5-2 lead, but the Ichabods scored once in the third when LaBarge recorded a sac fly sending Mead home after she singled to lead off the inning trimming the Toro lead to 5-3, but Dominquez Hills added two more in the bottom of the third increasing its lead back to 7-3.
The Toro added a solo run in the fifth taking an 8-3 lead and the Ichabods went down in order in the seventh in the loss.
Schreiner had two hits to lead the Ichabods' eight-hit attack.
