TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn baseball won all four of its games this weekend at the Northwestern Oklahoma Ranger Festival capped off by an 8-3 victory over Oklahoma Baptist on Sunday. The Ichabods are slated for their first home series next week as they host Northern State Feb 18-21.
For the second consecutive game,
Cal Watkins led off the game with a double to right field. With one out,
Parker Dunn launched another two-run home run to give the Ichabods an early 2-0 advantage in the first. Dunn had hit a two-run homer in three-consecutive at bats going back to Saturday's game against New Mexico Highlands.
The offense for the Bison (3-3) came alive in the fourth frame as they scored one run on three hits and then evened the score at 2-2 in the fifth inning.
Brett Ingram drew a one out walk in the sixth and advanced to third on a single from
Kros Bay.
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli reached on a fielder's choice and recorded an RBI as Ingram scored to give the lead back to Washburn.
Washburn (5-3) created some more space and went up 4-2 in the seventh inning after
Connor Scott hit a two-out triple and then scored two batters later on a fielding error.
Oklahoma Baptist continued its fight and trimmed the deficit to one run again after a leadoff single in the seventh came around to score and make it 4-3.
The Ichabods added a trio of insurance runs in the eighth. Watkins ripped his second double of the afternoon to score two and then scored on Scott's two-base hit to put Washburn up, 7-3.
Washburn added one final run in the ninth when Ingram hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall.
Bay led the team in hits as he went 3-4 on the afternoon. Watkins hit a pair of doubles and collected two RBI and scored twice. Scott also legged out two extra base hits and scored once and had an RBI.
Freshman
Wyatt Hardy captured his first win on the mound as he allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work and struck out two. Washburn starter
Jack Brimacombe went five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with zero walks and eight strikeouts.
