TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods picked up a pair of wins over Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon at Gahnstrom Field as they won the opener 9-1 in five innings before rallying for a 10-6 game in the nightcap. Washburn will host Quincy at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.
Game 1 – Washburn 9, UMSL 1 (5 innings)
The Ichabods jumped on the board in their first at bat as
Marrit Mead led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a single by
Autymn Schreiner. After
Jaden LaBarge reached after getting hit,
Ashton Friend cleared the bases with a home run to center putting the Ichabods up 3-0.
After a scoreless second, Washburn tacked on two more with a single by
Hadley Kerschen and then Friend reached after getting hit and
Kimi Patterson also reached after getting hit,
Maddie Stipsits drove in two with a single to center as Washburn went up 5-0.
The Ichabods added a solo run in the fourth when Mead hit a solo home run and then Washburn added three more in the fifth after UMSL scored a single run in the top of the fifth.
Jaycee Ginter and Patterson singled then Mead drove in two with a double. After Schreiner walked, Kerschen finished the game with a single scoring Mead leading to the 9-1 run-rule victory.
Ginter picked up the win striking out 10 scattering three hits and collecting two hits in the batter's box. Mead had two hits and drove in three and Friend drove in three Ichabods.
Game 2 – Washburn 10, UMSL 6
The Tritons (1-3) took an early 3-0 lead after their first two at bats before the Ichabods came back with four runs in the second when Patterson and
Kaylee Wagner both walked and then after a Stipsits single and a Mead walk, Kerschen cleared the bases with a double down the left field line taking a 4-3 lead.
UMSL added a solo run in the top of the third tying the score at 4-4 and Washburn would come back and take the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Friend hit her second home run of the day down the left field line as Washburn went up 5-4.
After UMSL took a 6-5 lead with a two-run homer of its own in the top of the sixth, Washburn came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame capped by Friend's third homer of the day, this one off the scoreboard, as Washburn went up 10-6.
Ginter recorded her second win of the day striking out four pitching 3 2/3 innings in relief. Friend drove in four and Kerschen sent home three Ichabods in the win.
