TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn baseball team completed the first MIAA series of the season with a sweep against Fort Hays State, capturing the third win by the score of 14-9 on Monday afternoon. The Ichabods will host Emporia State for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
For the second-straight game, the Ichabods (11-4, 3-0 MIAA) got on the board in the first inning as
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli led off the frame getting hit by the pitch and then advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from
Cal Watkins.
Parker Dunn then brought Clark-Chiapparelli home with an infield single that hit off the pitcher's foot.
Zion Bowlin and
Brett Ingram followed with singles of their own to load up the bases with one out.
Connor Scott's sacrifice fly brought scored Dunn to give Washburn the early 2-0 advantage.
Bowlin led off the bottom of the third with a double to left field and then moved up to third on Ingram's single. Scott came up to the plate again and on the first pitch, hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 game.
Washburn's offense erupted in the fifth inning with 10 runs and seven hits. Leading things off, Bowlin and Ingram both sent the first pitch of the their at bats to right field for back-to-back singles. Scott loaded up the bases after he safely reached first on a fielding error by the pitcher.
Kros Bay collected an RBI after he got hit by the pitch and kept the bases juiced. Up next was
Quinn Waterbury, who hit the first pitch to deep left center for a three-run double.
Cale Savage kept the line moving with a single through the right side to score Waterbury. For the second time in the game, Clark-Chiapparelli was hit by the pitch and Watkins drew a walk to load up the bases again.
The batting order came back around to Bowlin, who was walked to bring in another run. A single up the middle by Ingram scored two and then Scott's single through the left side brought Bowlin home. A wild pitch resulted in the final run scored in the frame home and put the Ichabods in front, 13-0.
The Tigers (1-13, 0-3 MIAA) started the top of the sixth with a double that eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Trailing by 10 with two outs in the top of the seventh, Fort Hays State scored three runs after two walks and then back-to-back singles.
In the eighth inning, Waterbury led off with a walk and Savage was hit by the pitch to put runners on first and second. A groundout moved both runners up one base and then a sacrifice fly from
Teagan Tamiya scored the Ichabods' 14th run of the contest.
Fort Hays added four more runs on three hits in the eighth and then one more in the ninth to cut the deficit to 14-9 before the game ended on a fly out.
Washburn finished the game with 15 hits and nine different Ichabods recorded at least one hit. Ingram closed out the afternoon 4-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Bowlin went 3-4 and scored three times. Waterbury and Scott recorded three RBI apiece.
Austin Gerety received the win and threw a scoreless fifth inning and allowed just one hit and struck out one. Washburn starter
Jack Brimacombe went four innings and did not allow a run and surrendered two hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts.
