MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Washburn baseball team tied up the game twice, but never held a lead as the Ichabods fell at Barry on Saturday afternoon, 6-4. The Ichabods continue the opening weekend in Florida tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 6) at Palm Beach Atlantic. First pitch against the Sailfish is set for noon (CT).
The Buccaneers (1-1) wasted little time getting on the board as they scored two runs on three hits in the first inning.
Washburn's (0-2) offense got started up in the second as
Zion Bowlin led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a groundout.
Kros Bay hit a single to the gap in right center to make it a 2-1 contest.
With one out in the top of the third,
Connor Scott doubled to left field and moved up to third on a wild pitch. The Buccaneers' pitcher began to struggle with command as he issued three-consecutive walks to allow the Ichabods the game-tying run after
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli's free pass. Barry brought in a new pitcher and on the second pitch, the inning ended with a double play.
In the home half of the third, the Buccaneers loaded the bases after a single and back-to-back hit batters. A single to left gave Barry the lead again at 3-2. Washburn starter
Casey Steward locked in and recorded a strikeout and got a lineout to leave all three runners stranded.
The Ichabods had one hit and one left on base in both the fifth and sixth innings before getting things going again in the seventh.
Easton Bruce made his Ichabod debut and sent the first pitch he saw through the right side for a single.
Cal Watkins followed that up with a single to right and Scott kept the line moving with the third-straight single of the frame to level the score at 3-all. The Buccaneers retired the next three batters to keep the game tied.
Barry reclaimed the lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh and added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly. The Bucs tacked on another run in the eighth to go up, 6-3.
The Ichabods made one more push in the ninth inning as Scott hit a one out triple to left and
Parker Dunn walked after a nine pitch at bat. Bowlin's single to right field easily scored Scott to make it 6-4. That was as close as it got, though, as the new Barry pitcher closed out the game retiring the next two Ichabod batters.
Watkins and Scott were both 3-5 at the plate while Scott had two extra base hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Bowlin had two hits and scored once and drove in a run.
Making his first career start, Steward went 5.0 innings and allowed three runs and struck out four.
