Ichabod baseball rallies for extra inning win at Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Washburn baseball team came back from a 3-0 deficit and scored the game-tying run in the eighth before going on to win 5-3 in 10 innings at Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods close out their Florida trip tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 7) at Lynn University.

The Sailfish (2-2) got on the board quickly in the first inning as the leadoff hitter tripled and then scored on a throwing error. With one out, Palm Beach Atlantic extended its lead to 2-0 with a solo home run.

PBA went up 3-0 in the sixth frame after another solo shot over the left field fence.

Although the Ichabods (1-2) had runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, they were unable to bring anyone home until the seventh. Brett Ingram led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on Kros Bay's single and then Bay moved up to second base on a wild pitch. Up next was Easton Bruce, who grounded out to bring home Ingram and send Bay to third. Otto Jones brought in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Ichabods had runners on first and second after an error and single before the inning ended with a groundout.

Holding a one run lead, Palm Beach Atlantic threatened to add some insurance runs as it started the bottom of the seventh with a single and a walk. Joel Casillas took over on the mound for Washburn and retired the next three batters to escape the inning without damage.

In the top of the eighth, Parker Dunn reached first after getting hit by the pitch. With two outs and holding a 3-2 count, Bay made contact and sent the ball to third base and reached on a throwing error while Dunn raced to score the tying run.

Similar to the previous inning, the Sailfish had runners on first and second when the Washburn bullpen came through as Dalton Huggins entered the game with two outs and ended the inning on a strikeout.

With the game still tied at three heading to the bottom of the ninth, Huggins locked in and struck out the side to send the game to extras.

The Ichabods capitalized on a pair of errors by Palm Beach Atlantic in the 10th inning. Zion Bowlin recorded his first hit of the day with a single to start off the frame. Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli landed a sacrifice bunt and PBA's pitcher made an errant throw towards second base, allowing both runners to move up into scoring position. Dunn hit a sacrifice fly to easily score Bowlin, but another error in an attempt to catch Clark-Chiapparelli allowed him to score the second run of the play and give the Ichabods a 5-3 advantage.

Cash Crane came on to close out the game for the Ichabods and after retiring the first two batters, he issued two walks before ending the game on a strikeout to earn the save.

Connor Scott was the only Ichabod to record two hits as he went 2-5 at the dish. Bowlin, Dunn, Ingram, and Bay all had one hit and scored one run. Jones had an RBI and was walked three times.

Cole Warner started his first game for the Ichabods and received a no-decision after going 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

The bullpen had a good strong showing as Austin Gerety made his Washburn debut and struck out both batters he faced to end the fourth inning and leave two Sailfish stranded. Wyatt Hardy made his first collegiate appearance and went two innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Casillas didn't allow a run in 1.2 innings of work and Huggins picked up the win as he struck out all four batters he faced.
