TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn pitching staff held Northwest Missouri to one run on four hits while the Ichabod offense provided plenty of support in a 10-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon. The Ichabods return to the road this weekend and take on Missouri Southern for three games starting Friday, March 18.
The Ichabods (17-6, 8-2 MIAA) got going in a hurry in the bottom of the first as leadoff man
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli tripled on the first pitch of his at bat and then scored on a wild pitch.
Cal Watkins singled to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and later swiped third base. With one out,
Zion Bowlin's single brought in the second run of the game to give Washburn an early 2-0 advantage.
Northwest Missouri (5-15, 1-9 MIAA) cut Washburn's lead in half in the second frame after getting two runners on by way of hit by pitches and a double drove in one run. Washburn starter
Charlie Kiefer left two runners stranded with a lineout and flyout.
Trevor McCollum and
Otto Jones started the home half of the second with back-to-back singles and McCollum scored on Clark-Chiapparelli's bunt single. Watkins recorded a groundout RBI to put Washburn up 4-1.
For the second-straight inning, Washburn started off the frame with three-consecutive singles as
Brett Ingram and Bowlin reached base and
Connor Scott kept the line moving with an RBI one base hit. With runners on second and third, McCollum doubled down the left field line to increase Washburn's lead to 7-1.
The Ichabods capitalized on a couple of Bearcat errors in the seventh. The inning started with a fielding error and a Bowlin single and Scott walk loaded up the bases for
Kros Bay, who also reached on an error that scored one run. McCollum's sac fly scored Bowlin for the Ichabods' ninth run of the contest.
Washburn tacked on one final run in the 10th with the bench players stringing together some offense.
Teagan Tamiya drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch and traded place with
Shane Morrow on his double to left center.
The Ichabods have produced double-figure runs in 10 games this season, including the last three in a row. Bowlin finished the day 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Clark-Chiapparelli also landed three hits and scored twice. McCollum was 2-3 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored.
The Washburn pitchers recorded four 1-2-3 innings and held the Bearcats without a hit from the third until the eighth inning. Kiefer (3-1) earned the win after going four innings and allowing just one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Aside from a pair of walks,
Wyatt Hardy worked three clean innings in relief.
Cole Warner pitched a scoreless eighth and surrendered just two singles.
Britt Brown closed out the game and needed only nine pitches to retire the side in order.
