DENVER, Colo. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader falling 3-1 and 7-3 at Metro State. Washburn (20-11) will be back in action next weekend returning to MIAA play at Lincoln.
Game 1 - Metro State 3, Washburn 1
The Washburn Ichabods got on the board first when
Hadley Kerschen singled and then after a hit batter and a single by
Jaycee Ginter, Washburn took a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, MSCD tied the score and added two more in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Washburn would outhit the Roadrunners 8-5 in the game, but left 12 runners on base.
Ginter drove in the only run for the Ichabods and
Marrit Mead had two hits. In the circle, Ginter fell to 14-3 striking out 13 giving up five hits and three earned runs.
Game 2 - Metro State 7, Washburn 3
As they did in the top of the first in the opening game, the Ichabods put a run up on the scoreboard after Mead doubled to start things off and then moved to third on an
Autymn Schreiner ground out. Ginter's groundout drove in Mead as Washburn went up 1-0.
In the Roadrunners' first at bat, Metro State would score six times with five coming with two outs going up 6-1.
In the fourth, the Ichabods loaded the bases after a walk by Ginter and Kerschen then a single by
Kaylee Wagner, but a force play at the plate and a strikeout ended the threat.
Washburn put its first two batters on the bases in the top of the sixth when
Ashton Friend and Kerschen doubled, but the Ichabods finished the frame with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout coming up empty.
The Roadrunners added a solo run in the sixth to go up 7-1.
In the seventh,
Maddie Stipsits was hit by a pitch and Mead collected her second hit of the game. Ginter recorded an RBI with a single to left scoring Stipsits cutting the lead to 7-2. A groundout followed by a RBI by Kerschen trimmed the lead back to four at 7-3, but a groundout ended the game.
Mead and Stipsits each had two hits as the Ichabods recorded eight in the game. The Ichabods stranded nine runners in the nightcap as
Raegen Hamm took the loss in the circle.
Ashlie Thissen pitched the final 5 1/3 of the game allowing one earned run striking out three.
