TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn baseball team lost the series rubber match to Central Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon, 10-2. The Ichabods will wrap up their four-game homestand with an MIAA matchup against Northwest Missouri on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The Bronchos (22-14, 14-9 MIAA) went up 2-0 in the second inning with a home run and a triple that scored on an RBI groundout.
Central Oklahoma extended its lead to 5-0 the following inning after scoring three runs on five hits.
Washburn (24-13, 14-9 MIAA) scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third after
Cale Savage and
Easton Bruce started off the frame with back-to-back singles.
Parker Dunn was hit by the pitch to load up the bases with one out and after a pitching change,
Brett Ingram doubled to right center to bring in one run before Bruce was thrown out at home.
The Ichabod defense came through in the fourth and fifth innings. After a leadoff walk in the fourth, Washburn turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame. In the fifth, a hit batter put a Broncho on first, but he was later picked off to send it to the bottom of the fifth.
With one out in the sixth inning, Ingram landed another double and came around to score on a single from
Cal Watkins that trimmed UCO's lead to 5-2.
Central Oklahoma added some insurance to its lead with three unearned runs in the eighth. The Bronchos added two final runs in the ninth to stretch their lead to 10-2.
In his second inning of work, Kyler Patterson closed the door in the bottom of the ninth and the game ended on a flyout.
The Bronchos out hit the Ichabods, 13-6, and had seven extra base hits, including four triples. Ingram played a part in both of Washburn's runs as he went 2-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Bruce also had two hits on the afternoon.
Washburn starter
Wyatt Hardy (1-3) was tabbed with the loss after he went 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two.
John Cross threw four scoreless innings in relief and surrendered only one hit, one walk, and one hit batter and recorded three strikeouts.
