TOPEKA, Kan. – In a battle for the MIAA women's tennis regular-season title, The No. 50 Ichabods fell to No. 4 Central Oklahoma, 7-0. The Ichabods claim the second seed in the MIAA tournament from April 29-May 1.
The match started in favor of Washburn (13-10) as the No. 3 doubles team,
Svea Crohn and
Marta Torres, took down the 49th-ranked doubles team, Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock, 6-4. The win marks Torres and Crohn's first ranked win in doubles and moves them to 16-3 on the season.
Central Oklahoma (17-1) evened doubles play with a tightly contested match at No. 1 doubles.
Lara Schmid and
Isabella Martensson went back-and-forth with the No. 1 doubles team in a 6-3 loss. The Bronchos earned the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at no. 2 doubles.
In singles play, the Bronchos won the first four matches in straight sets to clinch the victory and the MIAA title. Torres battled against the No. 3 ranked Mae Canete at No. 1 singles in a 6-4, 6-3 loss.
At No. 4 singles, Schmid dropped the first set 6-1, then forced a third-set super tiebreaker with a 6-4 second-set win. However, Schmid would lose 10-4 in the tiebreaker.
Cadence Lynn started strong with a 6-1 set-one victory at the sixth position. Unfortunately, Lynn lost the next two sets, 6-2, 7-5, to finish the match.
The Ichabods are back in action as the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament from April 29-30 at Edmond Center Courts. Washburn plays the No. 7 seed in Emporia State in the quarterfinals on April 29 at 10 a.m.
