EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 15 Ichabods fell to No. 58 Harding in the first round of the MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Championship, 4-2.
In doubles competition, the Ichabods (17-5) fell behind after losing at No. 1 doubles to the 31st-ranked doubles team, 6-2. Washburn then lost a tough battle at No. 2 doubles by a 7-5 score.
Noah Neideck and
Daniel Bird's match was stopped since the doubles point was clinched. The doubles team was down 5-4 when the match was stopped.
The Ichabods turned it around in singles competition. Despite the absence of senior
Raul-Alin Dicu,
Miquel Perez stepped in at No. 1 singles and tied the match. Perez defeated Dani Ortiz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Tim Hammes topped Arthur Bellan to take the lead. Hammes grabbed his 10th win at No. 2 singles with scores of 7-5 and 6-2. Hammes tied the most singles wins by a freshman in a single season.
Harding (10-8) bounced back with three wins at the third, fifth and sixth positions.
Santiago Rendon fell in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (3) at No. 5 singles.
Sebastian Pjontek lost in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Finally, Neideck lost in three sets, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Washburn is currently ranked No. 4 in the Central Region. The selection committee will determine what four teams advance to the Central Regional on Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. on NCAA.com.
