TOPEKA, Kan. – The Ichabods fell in their regular season finale and dropped the series to Pittsburg State with a 13-2 loss on Sunday. The Ichabods will be the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament next week and will head to the No. 4 seed Central Oklahoma for a best-two-of-three quarterfinal series in Edmond, Okla. May 6-8.
Prior to the game, Washburn's 13 seniors were recognized for their contributions to the Ichabod baseball program.
Washburn (29-18, 19-14 MIAA) grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first after
Brett Ingram hit a one out triple and then scored on
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli's sacrifice fly.
Pittsburg State (29-18, 22-11 MIAA) went in front 4-1 after four runs on four hits in the third frame.
Rane Pfeifer took over on the mound and got the final out of the inning to leave the bases loaded.
The first three Ichabods reached base to start the bottom of the third as Ingram hit a leadoff double, Clark-Chiapparelli was walked, and
Parker Dunn was hit by the pitch.
Quinn Waterbury drove in one run with a single to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Gorillas went on to score in each of the next four innings to increase their lead to 9-2 after seven frames.
Pittsburg State tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth to go up, 13-2.
The Gorillas out hit the Ichabods, 16-5, and left 16 runners on base on the game. Ingram played a role in both of Washburn's runs as he finished the day 2-4 with a walk and scored twice. Waterbury went 2-3 and drove in a run.
Jack Brimacombe (2-4) received the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits, one walk, and four hit batters in 2.2 innings.
