SIOUX FALLS, SD – Washburn women's tennis storms past Southeastern Oklahoma State, 4-0, and advances to the NCAA Central Regional Finals. The Ichabods avenge their loss to the Savage Storm back in early March.
The Ichabods (15-11) started the match strongly in doubles competition.
Kinsey Fields and
Maja Jung finished first, defeating Vanessa Cozamanis and Sara Gonzalez, 6-3.
Svea Crohn and
Marta Torres finished soon after with a 6-4 win over Chiara Matteodo and Vanessa Nitu at No. 3 doubles.
No. 26
Isabella Martensson and
Lara Schmid also led in their match at No. 1 doubles, 5-3, but the match was not completed due to the doubles point being clinched.
Singles competition started with retirement at No. 4 singles. Schmid won the first set against Georgia Hosking, 6-1, and was ahead 2-0 in the second set when Schmid won by retirement. Jung extended the Washburn lead with a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory over Gonzalez. Fields stepped into the lineup for Martensson and clinched the victory at No. 6 singles. Fields lost the first 6-3 but forced a third set when she won 6-4 in the second set. In the third set, Fields wasted no time with a 6-1 set win.
The Ichabods' victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State () sets them up to face the second seed in Augustana in Sioux Falls on Saturday at 2 p.m. A win puts the Ichabods in the NCAA Women's Tennis finals from May 17-21.
