Bell Answered: Ichabods dispatch Griffons setting up rematch in Hillcats in MIAA Title game

EDMOND, Okla. -- The No. 23-ranked Washburn Ichabod softball team fell for the first time since March 16 snapping their 24-game winning streak but bounced back advancing to the MIAA Championship game on Sunday at noon against Rogers State. The Hillcats handed the Ichabods their first loss of the tournament in a 2-1 loss, but Washburn came back in its elimination game topping Missouri Western for the second time in as many days in an 8-1.

Missouri Western (30-22) took its only lead of the game when the Griffons sent seven batters to the plate on three walks and a hit batter sandwiched around three strikeouts by starter Raegen Hamm. However from that point on, Missouri Western managed just four more hits as Hamm improved to 11-6 on the season striking out nine scattering four total hits.

Washburn (45-12) was held scoreless in the second inning but scored six runs in the third inning taking advantage of a Western error. Marrit Mead singled and then after singles by Paige Robbins and Jaycee Ginter, Ashton Friend reached on a fielder's choice driving in Mead and then Jaden LaBarge's double drove in Robbins and Ginter. Autymn Schreiner reached on an error and after Kaylee Wagner drew a walk, Kimi Patterson singled up the middle driving in LaBarge and Schreiner.

The Ichabods tacked on two more in the fourth when Ginter singled and then scored on Friend's double to center and Friend would then score on LaBarge's single to left putting the Ichabods up 8-1.

Ginter was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and LaBarge drove in three with two hits. Robbins also had two hits to finish the season 12 for 13 against Missouri Western this season with a smoking .923 batting average.

The Hillcats ending the Ichabod winning streak sending Washburn to the elimination game with the Griffons.

Washburn was held scoreless until the third inning when Marrit Mead singled to center and the after a single by Paige Robbins, Ashton Friend singled to third scoring Mead as the Ichabods went up 1-0.

The Hillcats (46-9) scored both of their runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead they would not give up. The Ichabods were sit down in order in the sixth and in the seventh with two outs, Ellington Hogle singled and then after a double by Mead putting the tying run 60-feet from home, Washburn had a fly out to end the game.

Ginter struck out seven in the loss falling to 30-4 on the season while Andrea Morales, the MIAA Pitcher of the Year, struck out 10 improving to 29-3 on the season.

Mead and Robbins each had two hits for the Ichabods.
