Washburn soccer outlasts Oklahoma Baptist in 1-0 season opening win

TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn Soccer opened up the 2022 season at home with a 1-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist. A second half goal from Viviana Soto-Herrera off a penalty kick in the 80th minute was the difference in the game for the Ichabods who begin the season with a 1-0 victory for the second year in a row.

Washburn was the aggressor all night with a controlling possession advantage leading to seven shots in the first half by five different players. On the other end, a tight defensive effort held the Bison to just one shot in the first 45 minutes.

The Ichabods' shot advantage grew even more in the second half as they out-shot Oklahoma Baptist 8-1 to total 15 for the game with eight coming on-goal. Belle Kennedy paced Washburn with four shots, two on-goal, while Haley Rogers also had two on-goal. Defenders Carlee Thompson and Emily Michaelis played all 90 minutes to lead the attacking defense.

When the Bison did advance the ball, Raegan Wells made sure to stop any attacks, recording two saves on both of Oklahoma Baptist's shots. Wells played all 90 minutes as well to record her ninth solo shutout in her career.

After nearly 80 minutes of scoreless play Soto-Herrera took advantage of a yellow card penalty kick and shot the ball into the top right side of the net for her first goal as an Ichabod which proved to be the difference.

Washburn will hit the road for the first time and travel to Liberty, Missouri and face William Jewell College Sunday, August 28 at 1 p.m.
