Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Washburn soccer falls for the first time in 1-0 loss to Fort Hays State

HAYS, KS. -- Washburn soccer (5-1-1) lost its first game of the 2022 season Friday night to Fort Hays State University (5-0-2), 1-0.

The Ichabods were held scoreless for the second time in the season after being held to just one shot in the second half of the game. The only goal in the game came from Montserrat Diaz late in the 21st minute of the game, which was shot into the lower left corner of the net.

Washburn was the aggressor early on, and had momentum offensively, taking six shots in the first 22 minutes of the game, with five of them on target but saved. The Ichabods would only manage two more shots the rest of the game with a strong effort from the Tigers' defense led by defenders Emily Reitz and Reilly Madden who played the entire game.

The defense of Washburn was effective, allowing only seven total shots in the game with just two on target. In the second half, Fort Hays only managed to tally two shots, neither of which were on target.

Defenders Emily Michaelis and Carlee Thompson each played a full 90 minutes for a third consecutive game. In goal, Raegan Wells also played a full game recording one save on only two shots taken on goal.

Offensively Belle Kennedy led the Ichabods with two shots on goal. Both she and Khloe Schuckman took two shots in the game to pace Washburn's offensive attack. Four other players each attempted one shot in the game for the Ichabods.

Isabel Robben played a strong game in goal for the Tigers, playing all 90 minutes and saving all six shots that were taken on goal. Montserrat Diaz and Hannah Mares each took two shots for Fort Hays State to lead them. One shot for each was on target including the goal from Diaz.

Washburn's matchup with the Tigers concludes non-conference play where they finish with a 5-1-1 record. The Ichabods will begin MIAA play Sunday, Sept. 18 on the road against the University of Nebraska at Kearney beginning at 1 p.m.
