Washburn records fourth shutout of season in 1-0 win to halt Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Washburn (7-1-1) scored one goal just before halftime which was all that was needed Friday night to defeat Rogers State (4-3-2) on the road, 1-0.

The Ichabods win for the fourth time in the last five games and for the second time in two MIAA contests. It is the first time since 2006 that Washburn has started 2-0 in conference play, and the first time both wins have come away from home.

In the first half, the Ichabods dictated the pace of the game, maintaining a strong possession advantage and being aggressive on offense. Washburn took nine shots in the first half, compared to just four for the Hillcats.

Early in the 42nd minute it was Haley Rogers who scored over Rogers State after the ball got loose in the box. She was able to shoot it across the goal and into the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.

In the second half, Rogers State went on the offensive, controlling the ball and taking 10 total shots in the half as they attempted to mount a comeback. In the 67th minute, a penalty on Washburn in the box gave the Hillcats a penalty kick. Sarah Ovalle shot it towards the bottom left corner of the goal but it was saved by Raegan Wells.

Wells played all 90 minutes of the match, recording five saves on 14 total shots faced from Rogers State. It was the fourth time this season that Wells has gone all 90 minutes to record a solo shutout. She was flanked by defenders Taylor Bockover, Carlee Thompson, Emily Michaelis and Lakin Rold who each played all 90 minutes, keeping the Hillcats scoreless.

Late in the second half, the Ichabods were able to take back control of the game, with each team taking just two shots in the final 16 minutes of play.

The 14 total shots from Rogers State came from eight different players, with six taking two shots each. Andrea Egerer was the most accurate, with both shots on goal. In goal, Tiffany Brittan played all 90 minutes and recorded five saves in the game.

Washburn was led in shots by Khloe Schuckman, who took five of the 13 Ichabod shots, two of which were on target. Haley Rogers was the only other player who took more than one shot, with three in the game. Rogers' goal marks the first time this season that all of Washburn's scoring comes from off the bench.

The Ichabods will complete their road trip Sunday, Sept. 25 against Northeastern State beginning at 1 p.m.
