TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn (8-2-1, 3-0-1 MIAA) scored its quickest goal of the season Friday night and controlled the rest of the game to defeat Missouri Western State, (3-5-3, 1-2-1 MIAA) 1-0.
Just 67 seconds into the game Riley Wells scored a breakaway goal after outrunning the Griffons' defense to put the Ichabods up. It is the second time Wells has scored before the three-minute mark this season.
After the initial goal, Washburn's defense controlled the rest of the first half, allowing Missouri Western State to take only three shots, none on-target. The Ichabods took six shots in each half, with a total of seven on goal.
The only shot attempt from the Griffons that was on target came in the second half and was blocked by Raegan Wells. Wells played all 90 minutes to complete a third straight solo shutout. It is her sixth solo shutout of the season in just 11 games and the 14th of her career.
The defensive trio of Lakin Rold, Carlee Thompson and Emily Michaelis each played a full 90 minutes, and were joined by Cloe Quintana from the midfield position to assist in the shutout effort.
The low-scoring contest was also a physical one, with eight cards issued in the game, including six in the final ten minutes of action.
Overall Missouri Western was only able to manage five shots in the contest, coming from three players. Jaden Skinner and Kaili Campbell each had two attempts, while Skinner had the only shot that was on target.
Offensively for Washburn, Haley Rogers led the Ichabods in shot attempts with three, and two shots on goal. Lakin Rold and Khloe Schuckman each had two shots in the game, with both of Rold's on target. Keeley Kroonenberg played all 90 minutes in goal for the Griffons, recording six saves in the contest.
Washburn's record of 8-1-2 overall is the program's best start since 2006. A 3-0-1 start to MIAA play is also the best since 2006, and it is only the second time in program history they have gone undefeated through four games. The Ichabods also stayed undefeated at home with a record of 4-0-1.
The current three-game shutout streak is the longest since a three-game stretch at the beginning of the 2019 season. The 1-0 victory snaps a six-game losing streak to the Griffons going back to 2015.
Washburn will stay at home to take on Northwest Missouri State beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2.
