Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Washburn falls to Bearcats 1-0 for first home loss

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn (8-2-2, 3-1-1 MIAA) fell for the first time on home Sunday afternoon to Northwest Missouri State (6-4-2, 2-3-0 MIAA) in a 1-0 contest.

Early on neither side could create good looks at the net, with the ball staying near midfield for most of the early portion of the game. Through the first 30 minutes of play, each team had just one shot.

In the final three minutes of the first half, the Ichabods got back-to-back shot opportunities by Khloe Schuckman, neither of which found the back of the net. The Bearcats countered and took advantage of the retreating defense to score. Elaina Shromoff scored from the right side of the box into the left corner of the net after receiving a pass from Teagan Blackburn.

The first 15 minutes of the second half were played like the beginning of the game, with each team managing only one shot in that time. Washburn picked up its aggressiveness late in the game with three shots in the final 30 minutes but could not find the back of the net.

Northwest Missouri State responded to the more aggressive offense with a few breakaways, resulting in six second-half shots. Raegan Wells made three of her four total saves in the final 30 minutes of the game to keep the Bearcats at just one goal.

In total, the Ichabods were outshot 12-7 in the game but had six attempts on goal compared to only five for Northwest Missouri. Seven shot attempts is the second lowest total of the season for Washburn, and only the third time they have been held below 10 tries.

Lily Ellis made all six saves for the Bearcats in goal, playing a full 90 minutes. Offensively for Northwest Missouri, Hannah Stirling had a team-high three shots while three other players finished with two. Nobody had more than one shot that was on target.

Khloe Schuckman led the Ichabods with three shots in the game. Viviana Soto-Herrera had two attempts. Both Schuckman and Soto-Herrera had two shots on goal. Only four players attempted a shot for Washburn in the game.

The Ichabods will be on the road next, traveling to take on Missouri Southern beginning Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.
