WICHITA, Kan. -- The Ichabods (2-0) led early after claiming the doubles point but were not able to keep pace in singles play, losing to Wichita State (3-3) 4-2 in an exhibition match for Washburn.
The Ichabods began doubles play with a 6-3 loss at the No. 1 spot as Noah Neideck and Sebastian Pjontek fell. Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon came right back to even up the doubles scoring with a 6-3 win of their own at No. 2. Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji secured the first point of the match with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Singles play began with two losses for Washburn. First Sebastian Pjontek fell at No. 2, losing 6-2 and 6-1. Moritz Pieper lost at No. 6 with the same scores. Tim Hammes claimed a two-set victory at No. 1, winning 6-2 and 6-4 to even the match.
Following the victory Noah Neideck and Santiago Rendon lost in two sets from No. 5 and No. 3 respectively to close the match at 4-2 in favor of the Shockers. Daniel Bird was tied 3-3 the middle of his second set at No. 5 after winning the first set 6-3.
Washburn will be back in action next at home for the first time in the spring, with an exhibition against William Woods Jan. 28 at noon at the Genesis Tennis Complex.
