TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 16 Washburn men's tennis got its first action of the season in Topeka with a 6-1 exhibition victory over William Woods University on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles play the Ichabods got wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to secure the match's first point. Noah Neideck and Sebastian Pjontek won at No. 1 while Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji won at No. 3, both with scores of 6-4. Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon were up 5-4 at No. 2 but the match was left unfinished.
In singles action Sebastian Pjontek won at No. 2, with scores of 6-4 in both sets. Santiago Rendon won 6-2 in the first set at No. 3 and closed out the dual with a close 7-6(3) second set victory. Tim Hammes lost a long three-set match at No. 1, falling 10-7 in the third set.
Daniel Bird notched a win at No. 4 with 6-4 and 6-0 sets. Noah Neideck won 6-3 in the second set after a close first set to win at No. 5. Moritz Pieper closed out the scoring with a two-set win at No. 6, winning 6-1 and 6-2.
Washburn will play its first official match of the spring next Saturday, Feb. 4, against William Jewell College at 2 p.m.
