TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 16 Washburn Ichabods (3-0) started the spring season with a 7-0 home sweep over William Jewell College (4-4) on Saturday afternoon.
Doubles play started with a 6-2 win at No. 2 for Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon. Quickly after, Sebastian Pjontek and Noah Neideck claimed a 6-1 win at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point. Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji were tied 3-3 at No. 3 and the rest of the match was left unfinished.
In singles play Santiago Rendon continued his quick day with 6-2 and 6-3 wins at No. 3. No. 35 Sebastian Pjontek followed with a two-set win of his own, with sets of 6-4 and 6-3. Tim Hammes clinched the match, winning a three-set dual 6-3, 4-6, and 6-1 at No. 1.
The Ichabods and Cardinals continued play and the Ichabods continued to win, with Noah Neideck picking up 6-4 and 6-0 set wins at No. 4. Moritz Pieper followed at No. 5, winning 6-1 and 6-2. Yoshinobu Nakatsuji closed out the match and completed the sweep, winning 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 6.
Washburn picks up its first sweep of the season with the win and moves to 19-0 all-time against William Jewell. The Ichabods stay undefeated, moving to 3-0 on the year while dropping the Cardinals to 4-4 in the process.
Washburn has a quick return to action as they travel to take on Drake tomorrow, Feb. 5 beginning at 4 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
