TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 15 Washburn women's tennis opened up spring play with a 7-0 exhibition sweep of William Woods University on Saturday afternoon.
Doubles play for the Ichabods kicked off with a win at No. 2 from Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid, winning 7-2 in a second set tiebreaker. Casie Curry and Maja Jung won 6-1 at No. 3 to claim the doubles point. Sonia Smagina and Marta Torres lost a close 6-4 match at No. 1.
Singles play for Washburn began with a two-set victory at No. 1 for Sonia Smagina with 6-2 and 6-1 scores. Maja Jung had a similar result at No. 2, winning 6-1 and 6-2. Marta Torres won the first set 6-1 at No. 3 and secured the victory with a close 7-6(6) win in set two.
Issabella Pensavalle and Isabella Martensson each won in two sets at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. All four sets were won 6-1 in favor of the Ichabods. Maddie Shelley closed out the match with another two set win with scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
Washburn will play its first official match of the spring next Saturday, Feb. 4, against William Jewell College at 2 p.m.
