TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 15 Washburn Ichabods (2-1) started the spring regular season with a 7-0 sweep of the William Jewell Cardinals (5-4) on Saturday afternoon.
Washburn was in-sync all around in doubles play, with all three teams winning 6-1 matches. First to finish was the No. 9 pairing of Sonia Smagina and Lara Schmid at No. 1. Maja Jung and Casie Curry had the same result, clinching the doubles point with a victory on court three. At No. 2 Marta Torres and Isabella Martensson closed out doubles action with another 6-1 win.
All six singles matches for the Ichabods lasted only two sets, and all six came out as wins. First, No. 2 Sonia Smagina won 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 1, picking up her 10th singles win of the season. No. 43 Maja Jung followed with a decisive win at No. 2, with sets of 6-1 and 6-0. Marta Torres won the deciding point at No. 3 with sets of 6-1 and 6-2.
Isabella Martensson started the back half of singles play with a No. 6 win by scores of 6-0 and 6-2. Casie Curry kept Washburn rolling with 6-3 and 6-1 set wins at No. 4. Issabella Pensavalle closed out the match and secured the sweep at No. 5 with wins by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
The Ichabods move to 2-1 on the season, with both wins being 7-0 sweeps, while dropping William Jewell to 5-4.
Washburn's next match will come in St. Louis Mo., against the University of Indianapolis at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 10.
