TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 23 Washburn (11-1-1, 5-0-1) scored one goal in each half and never allowed a shot on goal Friday night in a 2-0 shutout victory over Missouri Southern (0-11-2, 0-5-1) at Yager Stadium. The Ichabods finish the week off in a ranked matchup against No. 8 Central Missouri at home on Sunday at 1 p.m.
With the win Washburn matches its win total from last season as both the highest total under Davy Phillips and for the program since 2009.
Washburn shot early and often in the first half taking six shots in the first 10 minutes of action but not finding the back of the net. After a free kick late in the 18th minute Khloe Schuckman directed a ball off her head and over her shoulder to a streaking Riley Wells who deposited the ball from the right side of the field into the left corner of the net at exactly the 18-minute mark.
That was the final shot of the half for the Ichabods who out-shot the Lions seven to one in the first 45 minutes. Washburn kept up the attack in the second half and in the 68th minute Schuckman drew a foul in the box for a penalty kick. Ana Muruzabal converted on the opportunity knocking in her team-leading sixth goal of the season to go up 2-0.
The Ichabods spread the action around, with 21 players logging action in the match, and continued to be aggressive on offense. The home team finished with 19 total shots, 12 coming in the second half. Ten different players took shots in the match with Viviana Soto-Herrera leading with four taken. Muruzabal, Riley Wells and Mackinly Rohn each had two on target attempts.
Raegan Wells played the full match in goal earning her seventh solo shutout of the season and did not need to make a save with the stingy Washburn defense allowing only two shot attempts all match. Taylor Bockover led the defensive unit as the only other Ichabod to play all 90 minutes.
Bella Smith played the entire match in goal for the Lions making 90 saves, no player for Missouri Southern attempted more than one shot.
