No. 23 Washburn scores early and shuts out No. 8 Central Missouri in 1-0 win

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 23 Washburn (10-1-1, 6-0-1) scored an early goal and pitched a shutout the rest of the way to knock off No. 8 Central Missouri (10-3-1, 5-1-1) on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods stay unbeaten in conference play and head on the road to face Central Oklahoma at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20.

Along with staying tied atop the MIAA head coach Davy Phillips earned his 100th career coaching victory in the shutout effort and broke a 17-match losing streak against the Jennies.

All of the scoring in the match came in the first six minutes of action with Riley Wells beating the defense down the right side of the field and dishing to Khloe Schuckman who was open in the middle of the box and was able to knock in the only goal of the match into the left side of the net in the sixth minute.

Washburn was only able to manage one more shot in the first half with Central Missouri on the offensive. The Jennies earned four corner kicks in the first half alone but were held in check by the Ichabod defense. Raegan Wells made three saves on the four shots that did get past the first ten players in the first half.

In the second half Central Missouri still managed four corner kicks to the Ichabods three, but the shot attempts were flipped from the first half with Washburn taking four and the Washburn defense holding the attacking Jennies offense to just one shot in the final 45 minutes.

The defensive quartet of Taylor Bockover, Josie Boyle, Lakin Rold and Jordan Tenpas each played all 90 minutes of the match in Washburn's eighth shutout of the season. Raegan Wells went the distance as well to earn her seventh solo shutout in 2023.

Khloe Schuckman had half of the Ichabod shot attempts with three, two of which were on-target. Riley Wells had the other on-target attempt.

Kristen Wright played all 90 minutes of the match in goal for Central Missouri which lost its first match of the season in MIAA play. Wright recorded two saves in goal, no player attempted more than one shot in the match for the visiting Jennies.
