WICHITA, Kan. -- No. 8 Washburn (14-1-1, 8-0-1) won its fourth straight match on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 3-0 win over Newman (2-13-1, 1-8-0) on the road. The Ichabods will battle for first place in the MIAA on Friday Oct. 27 on the road against Fort Hays State.
With the win Washburn earned its 10th shutout of the season and stayed undefeated in conference play. For the first time all season the Ichabods held a team without a shot for the entire match as the Jets offense was grounded.
Viviana Soto-Herrera was busy throughout the day but started early, in the 16th minute going from the right side of the field and shooting across the box into the left corner of the net. The was all of the scoring in the first half with the Ichabods taking five shots with only the goal being on target.
Washburn applied pressure all game, earning five corner kicks in the first half and eight in the match. The pressure finally paid off again in the final 10 minutes. First, with the second goal of the game by Soto-Herrera, coming in the 83rd minute this time with an assist from Khloe Schuckman.
Less than five minutes later Soto-Herrera was on the other end, giving the ball up to Ana Muruzabal who netted her seventh goal of the season in the 88th minute to complete the scoring.
Six defenders logged at least 15 minutes in the effort not allowing a single shot or corner kick. Jordan Tenpas and Josie Boyle led the group playing all 90 minutes. Raegan Wells picked up her ninth solo shutout of the season and didn't have the opportunity to add to her save total thanks to the defense effort in front of her.
The Ichabods managed 13 shots in the match with eight going on goal. Khloe Schuckman led that group with four shots, two going on goal. Soto-Herrera was the only other player to attempt more than one shot, with both her attempts resulting in goals.
Jordan Webster played all 90 minutes in goal for Newman making five saves.
