No. 6 Washburn defeats Tigers 1-0 to win MIAA Regular Season Championship

HAYS, Kan. -- No. 6 Washburn soccer (15-1-1, 9-0-1) became the 2023 MIAA Regular Season Champions on Friday night with first with a 1-0 win over Fort Hays State (11-3-3, 7-2-1)to clinch a share and winning it outright after results from around the conference. The Ichabods will receive the second trophy in program history and recognize seniors at home on Sunday against Emporia State at 1 p.m.

Everything leads back to 2006 for the 2023 Washburn squad which matched the team from 16 years ago with the conference championship and also matched that team for the most wins in program history with 15.

The shutout victory over the Tigers clinched a share of the title and less than an hour later a tie between Central Missouri and Missouri Western clinched the trophy outright to the Ichabods. It extends WU's unbeaten streak to 15 matches going back nearly two full months to Sep. 3, the entirety of conference play.

It was a slow start to the busy day with no scoring in the first half of the match but Washburn was on the attack more than not, notching a five to two shot advantage in the first half. The only attempt for Fort Hays that was on target was stopped by Raegan Wells who notched her 10th solo shutout of the season on the night.

In the 52nd minute of the second half Khloe Schuckman was able to take the ball in the middle of the field all the way down to the edge of the box. She spun and squeezed between two Tiger defenders and went from left to right across the box with her left foot with the ball ricocheting off the goalkeeper's foot and into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

The Ichabods defense took over from there, building on the first half performance and allowed only one more shot over the final 37 minutes of the match for the groups 11th shutout of the season. Taylor Bockover, Josie Boyle and Jordan Tenpas each played all 90 minutes in the effort holding Fort Hays to six shots in the match. Behind them Wells made saves on the three that were on target.

Schuckman kept the pressure on all 90 minutes with four shots in the match, three more than any other player. The Ichabods also had three shots on-goal but took nine total in the match.

Isabel Robben made two stops playing the full match in goal for Fort Hays State.

Senior day ceremonies for Raegan Wells and Riley Painter will occur before the match on Sunday.
