TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 6 Washburn soccer (15-2-1, 9-1-1) wrapped up its regular season Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Emporia State (9-5-4, 8-2-1) on senior day. The Ichabods were locked into the No. 1 spot for the conference tournament before the match and were presented with the trophy after. They will host a quarterfinals match on Nov. 3.
Before the match began Washburn recognized its two seniors, Raegan Wells and Riley Painter on the field. After the action they got the MIAA Regular Season Championship trophy, the second in program history. In the first round of the MIAA Championship Tournament they will host Missouri Western State on Friday.
All of the scoring in the match came in the first half with the Hornets getting on the board in the 17th minute on a goal by Alexis Cole off her left foot into the top left corner of the net to go up 1-0. Early in the 22nd minute Khloe Schuckman was issued a red card and Washburn was forced to play 10 on 11 the rest of the way.
The Ichabods managed two shots in each half of the contest, with three going on goal, Jadyn Allen led with two shots off the bench. Emporia State had 10 total attempts in the contest, with seven coming in the final 45 minutes. Five total shots were on-target for the visitors.
Washburn was able to create a few attempts in the second half while playing one down but were eventually shut out for the first time in the 2023 season. The loss is also the first at home on the year after beginning with eight straight wins and is the first loss in MIAA play.
Raegan Wells played all 90 minutes in her senior day match, making four saves in the contest. Riley Painter logged a season-high 40 minutes off the bench. Josie Boyle was the only other Ichabod not to come out of the match from start to end. In total 19 players played in the match for Washburn.
Mackenzie Goen played all 90 minutes in goal for the Hornets and came away with three saves.
