Griffons mauled by late Ichabod goal

TOPEKA, Kan. – The regular season MIAA Champions and No. 8-ranked Washburn Ichabods move on to the MIAA Tournament semifinals with a 3-2 overtime win over Missouri Western on Friday night in Yager Stadium off the foot of Lindsey Maul who scored the go-ahead goal in the 106th minute off a scrum from an Ichabod corner kick moving Washburn into the next round of the MIAA playoffs. Washburn improved to 16-2-1 this season setting a program record for the most wins in a season topping the 15 victories the 2006 team had. The Ichabods advance to face Emporia State in the semifinals on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Stryker Complex in Wichita, Kan.

The Ichabods held off the Griffon advances the final two-plus minutes with a corner kick and a long shot on goal that was corralled by Raegan Wells and the Ichabods kept Missouri Western (5-8-6) at bay for the win.

Washburn jumped on the board first in the 10th minute when Belle Kennedy scored from the left side of the box off an assist from Aubrey Tanksley as Washburn took the 1-0 lead.

The Griffons scored goals in the 28th minute to tie the score as the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 at the break.

Missouri Western took its first lead of the match in the 51st minute, but 17 minutes later, Riley Wells scored in front of the Griffon net with the equalizer tying the score at 2-2. Neither team scored the remainder of regulation sending the game into overtime.

After the neither team scored in the opening extra 10 minutes, Maul's second goal of the season turned out to be the winner sending Washburn to Wichita for a semifinal match up with Emporia State. The Hornets topped the Ichabods on Oct. 29 in a 1-0 win while the Ichabods beat ESU on Sept. 5 in Emporia in an identical 1-0 game.

Washburn outshot the Griffons 15 to 10 with both squads putting eight shots on goal. The Ichabods had a 9 to 4 advantage in corner kicks.

Tanksley had five shots overall with a team-high three on goal and Wells had six saves in the match.
