WICHITA, Kan. – The top-seed and MIAA regular season champ Washburn Ichabods had a furious rally scoring both goals in matches final minutes but came up short as they fell in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan. to Emporia State in a 3-2. The Ichabods will find out their postseason fate on Monday when the NCAA Selection Show announces the 2023 NCAA Central Region pairings. Coming into this week, the Ichabods were ranked No. 1 in the region. The top two teams in the final regional poll will host two four-team pods starting Nov. 16 or Nov. 17. The Ichabods were leading the attack early one having three shots compared to one after eight minutes of action. However, the Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the 20
th minute making the most of their chances as the Ichabods were up 6 to 2 on shots.
ESU pushed its lead to 2-0 converting a corner kick 20 seconds before the halftime horn taking the lead into the break.
The Hornets stretched their lead to 3-0, 45 seconds into the off another corner kick.
Washburn got on the board in the 79
th minute when
Jadyn Allen scored from right in front of the goal when she put it in the back of the net on an assist from
Aubrey Tanksley.
Less than three minutes later in the 82
nd minute,
Ana Muruzabal's shot into the lower left side of the net off an assist from
Khloe Schuckman trimmed the ESU lead back to 3-2.
The Ichabods kept up the attack to the final seconds as a shot by
Lakin Rold went off the crossbar with 20 seconds to play and ESU recovered running out the clock.
Washburn falls to 16-3-1 on the season.
The three goals allowed were the most by an Ichabod opponent since Missouri-St. Louis scored a trio of goals in a 3-1 loss on Sept. 3 in the second match of the season.
Washburn outshot the Hornets 14-10 in the match and had 12 corners compared to five for ESU but were unable to convert those into goals.
Viviana Soto-Herrera had five shots and two on goals to lead Washburn's attack.
Khloe Schuckman had two shots on goal as well.
ESU improves to 11-5-4 with the win.
