SPRINGFIELD, Il. -- No. 16 Washburn (4-1) won its first road match of the spring securing a 5-2 victory over the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield (0-1).
Doubles competition began with a finish from No. 3 as Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Daniel Bird picked up a 6-3 win. Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon finished with the same score at No. 2 to earn the doubles point for the Ichabods. Sebastian Pjontek and Noah Neideck were locked into a 5-5 battle at No. 1 which was left unfinished.
Tim Hammes kicked off singles play at No. 1 with a two-set win by decisions of 6-3 and 6-2. Santiago Rendon followed with a pair of 6-2 set wins at No. 3. No. 35 Sebastian Pjontek lost a close first set 7-6(5) at No. 2. He responded with a 6-3 win to force a third set but fell 6-3 in the tiebreaking set.
Daniel Bird continued his clean day at No. 4, winning in two sets both with 6-3 scores to clinch the match for Washburn. Yoshinobu Nakatsuji added two the score winning 6-2 and 6-3 at No. 6. Moritz Pieper closed out singles play with a close two-set battle at No. 5, but came up just short with finishes of 7-6(4) and 7-6.
The Ichabods next match will be the first of conference play, a road contest against Augustana in Sioux Falls on Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning at 2 p.m.
