SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- No. 15 Washburn men's tennis (5-1, 1-0) kicked off conference play with a 7-0 road sweep of Augustana (2-4, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods return to Topeka next week and take on Rockhurst on Feb. 25.
Doubles play went in order beginning with a win on court one for Washburn from Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon with a 6-2 score. Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji followed suit with a 6-2 win of their own at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point. Moritz Pieper and Daniel Harkin finished a sweep of doubles with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Singles play began with a quick finish at No. 2 for Santiago Rendon, winning in two sets 6-1 and 6-4. Daniel Harkin made his spring singles debut with a win at No. 6 also in two sets, with finishes of 6-4 and 6-2. Daniel Bird won the match clinching point for the Ichabods at No. 3 with wins by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Tim Hammes had an extended first set but came out on top, winning 7-6(4), but made much quicker work in the second set, winning 6-3. Moritz Pieper picked up two set wins of 6-4 and 6-2 at No. 5. Miquel Perez finished out the sweep in his spring debut with two 7-6(3) wins at No. 4.
