BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The No. 22-ranked Washburn Ichabod softball team went 2-0 on the day two of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic with an extra inning 3-2 win over Henderson State and a 6-1 win over Southern Nazarene avenging their only loss of the season in the first game of the season. Washburn will wrap up the event on Sunday facing Arkansas Tech.
Game 1- WU 3, Henderson State 2 (9 innings)
Washburn defeated Henderson State 3-2 on Saturday thanks to a walk-off double by
Hadley Kerschen in the bottom of the ninth. The game was tied at two with Kerschen doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Washburn pitchers
Jaycee Ginter and
Sheyenne Cheek struck out nine, while HSU's Allen sat down 11.The Ichabods knotted the game up at two in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kimi Patterson singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.
Jaycee Ginter started the game in the circle for the Ichabods. The righty allowed three hits and one run over three innings, striking out five. Allen was on the rubber for Henderson State pitching eight and a third innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out 11.
The Ichabods had eight had eight hits in the game with Kerschen and Ginter recording multiple hits for Washburn with two hits each.
Cheek picked up her first win tossing six innings striking out four.
Game 2 – Washburn 6, Southern Nazarene 1
The Ichabdos picked up a 6-1 win over Southern Nazarene in the night cap. The Ichabods scored in the first inning on an RBI ground out by
Jaden LaBarge scoring Mead who led off the inning with a single. The Ichabods added a solo run in the second inning when Mead drew a bases-loaded walk scoring
Autymn Schreiner.
After Southern Nazarene scored one in the fourth then the Ichabods opened the game up with three in the fourth inning. Back to back doubles by
Danielle Schlader and Schreiner and then a single by Mead drove in another run.
Paige Robbins walked with the bases juiced and then Ginter was hit by a pitch scoring Kerchen.
Washburn added one more in the fifth when
Allison Hemsath singled scoring Schreiner.
Ginter went the distance striking out seven allowing an unearned run improving to 4-0 this season.
