No. 15 Ichabods push past Prairie Stars for 5-2 win

SPRINGFIELD, Il. -- No. 15 Washburn women's tennis (3-2) secured a Saturday morning victory with a 5-2 road win over Illinois Springfield (0-1) to move back above .500.  

Doubles play went in order with the first finish coming at No. 1 in favor of the Ichabods as Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung picked a 6-1 victory, the pairs second win in as many days. Isabella Martensson and Marta Torres followed up with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 to secure the doubles point. Casie Curry and Issabella Pensavalle completed a sweep of doubles, winning 6-3 at No. 3.  

No. 42 Maja Jung continued her quick day in singles, winning 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 3 to pick up the first singles point. No. 2 Sonia Smagina followed her with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1. Marta Torres lost the first set 6-3 but made a strong recovery in the next two sets, winning 6-4 and 6-2 over No. 10 ranked Eva Rubio to secure the match win for Washburn.  

At No. 5 Issabella Pensavalle fell in two sets, both with scores of 6-3 as Illinois Springfield earned first point of the match. Isabella Martensson won a swift match at No. 6 with 6-0 and 6-3 outcomes. Casie Curry lost a three-set match at No. 4, winning the first 6-2 then falling 7-6(1) and 1-0(9) in the third set tiebreaker. 

Washburn is out of action for over a week and returns on Sunday, Feb. 19, against Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D., at 10 a.m.
