No. 17 Washburn defeats Vikings 4-2 to finish road swing

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- No. 17 Washburn women's tennis (4-2) ended its three-match road swing with a 4-2 win over Augustana (5-1), breaking up the Viking's undefeated season. The Ichabods will be in Topeka next time they take the courts, against Rockhurst on Feb. 25. 

Washburn started the match with two key wins in doubles play, first at No. 3 from Marta Torres and Casie Curry by a score of 6-3. Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung followed with a 6-2 win at No. 1 over Senem Ocal and Florentia Hadjigergiou, the No. 11 ranked doubles pair in the nation. Issabella Pensavalle and Isabella Martensson led 5-3 at No. 2 but it was left unfinished.  

The Ichabods quickly picked up a point in singles from No. 42 Maja Jung, with a 6-0 and 7-5 win at No. 3. Augustana claimed its first point of the day as Marta Torres fell at No. 2 by scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Issabella Pensavalle fell in two sets at No. 6, 7-5 and 6-3 as the Vikings tied the match.  

No. 2 Sonia Smagina broke the tie at No. 1, coming back after dropping the first set 3-6 and won the final two sets 6-1 and 6-2. Isabella Martensson came through with the match clinching point from No. 5, winning in three sets by counts of 6(2)-7, 6-2, and 6-3. Casie Curry was in the middle of a three-set match at No. 4 which was left unfinished after splitting the first two sets 6-2 and 3-6.
